Elliana has been learning all about apples in school this week. On Monday she came home asking to make apple Pie. Granted I have never made an apple pie before so what better way to find a recipe but go to pinterest and sure enough there was a bunch to choose from. I chose the one that was easy and one that didn't contain too many ingredients that a)I didn't use a lot, which means I won't have in my pantry and b) ingredients that I don't think sounded good in a desert recipe at all. So on Thursday morning we finally got to make apple pie.
She wanted to help me peel the apples. We attempted but the crazy mom I am was afraid that her hands would slip and she would end up gushing blood everywhere due to the sharp peeler. So we compromised and she handed me the apples while mommy peeled. Cutting apples was another story she had apparently cut her finger a little in school on Monday so she said she was fine not helping me cut them all up. Again her job was to hand me the apples. A little bit harder job because the peeled apples were a lot more slippery but we did it. In the middle of it she ended up eating them more than helping me so it all worked out. She did mix and measure all the ingredients up.
Now of course you can't bake Apple pie without any vents in the pie crust so what does my little witty 4 year old insist in having on our pie? A smiley face, as you can see on the picture.
She was so proud when the pie was done baking, she couldn't wait to eat it. I do have to say I was proud of myself as well seeing that she did a great job helping me and we made our very first homemade apple pie ever and daddy gave us a great compliment saying it was delicious and the recipe is a keeper. Yum!
The recipe we used is from this website: http://www.culinarycoutureblog.com/2008/05/apple-pie.html?m=1
I used the Pillsbury pie crust. I was not going to attempt making the pie crust too and it worked out just fine.
FILLING
6-7 medium apples
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
FOR FILLING:.
Preheat oven 450°F, after 5 minutes of preheating, pre-bake the bottom pie shell 1-2 minutes.
Cut apples and set aside in a medium/large sized bowl.
In another bowl, mix sugars, spices and 2 tbsp flour. Reserve 2-3 tbsp of mixture in a seperate bowl.
Toss apples in mixture, and arrange in pie pan (dome shape works well).
Sprinkle 1 tsp flour, then with reserved mixture.
Dot with butter, and cover with second crust. Seal/flute edges and slit steam vents.
Bake for 10 minutes at 450°F, then rotate pie and bake 30-35 minutes at 350°F
